写真集『Please Notify the Sun』

写真家のStephen Gillさんにご自身の写真集に使った紙を教えていただきました。

選んだ理由: 私がこの素晴らしい紙(*ヴァンヌーボV-FS)を初めて見たのは2009年の日本で、印刷された紙の感触にとても驚きました。紙を見て触って感じたことは、どうすればこのように静謐さと控えめさを備えることが出来るかということです。また、紙がとても独特な方法で印刷インキを捉えているという第一印象でした。

ヴァンヌーボV-FSではインキが紙の表面に浮いているように見えます。一見、塗工がされていない紙に見えるのに、どうしてこのようなことが可能なのでしょうか。よくよく調べると、ヴァンヌーボV-FSには塗工が施されており、他の非塗工の紙では吸収されてしまうインキが、特別な方法でしっかりと表面に保持されます。インキ定着が良く、ニス等の加工が必要ないなと思いました。

今回の写真集『Please Notify the Sun』までの11年間、この紙は常に私の心の中にありました。この作品集には重要かつ微細なディテールを含んだ大きな色のエリアがたくさんあるので、それを印刷で表現するために、ヴァンヌーボV-FSは理想的でした。印刷物に表現できたこと、そして一連の写真作品の精神をそのまま表現できたことにとても満足しています。

I first saw this incredible paper in 2009 in Japan. I was amazed at the feel of the printed sheet. How was it possible to have a paper that was quiet and understated, It was something that I felt through sight and touch, but to add to this first impression was the way also the paper handled ink in what was a very unique way.

The ink almost seemed to hover above the surface of the paper. How was this possible as the sheets appear uncoated. Though after learning later its a slightly coated paper and the images that are printed on it seem to retain a certain special solid feeling that is so often knocked back with other papers or the ink gets absorbed into the paper. With this paper the ink sat so well and without the help of varnish etc.

So the paper had been in my mind for eleven years before I finally managed to print on it. It felt like the ideal choice for Please Notify the Sun also as in this work there are many big slabs of colour coupled with crucial fine details and I was happy both were retained in print and kept the spirit of the photographic series intact.
